Research Technician I (Seattle)

Position: Research Technician I
Department: Amemiya Lab/Aquarium
Status: Full time (40 hours/week), Saturday-Wednesday
Responsibilities and Qualifications: Individual needed to split time between lab and zebrafish facility during weekend hours.
Aquarium responsibilities include culturing zebrafish (Danio rerio), rotifers and artemia; feeding, cleaning, basic system maintenance and assessment of water chemistries for a population of adult and larval fish. This position will require maintaining the life support systems associated with the zebrafish including pumps, UV sterilizers, filters, plumbing and control devices as well as all associated data sheets, notes and paperwork.
Lab responsibilities include running various robots to pick and replicate genomic (Bacterial Artificial Chromosome) libraries. This individual will also carry out simple experiments that require DNA isolation and manipulation, and will be involved in laboratory maintenance as needed such as weighing materials; mixing chemicals; performing calculations and routine tests; dissecting and preparing biological tissues and preparing slides and specimens; and cleaning, operating and performing minor maintenance on laboratory equipment; taking inventory of and stocking laboratory supplies, updating laboratory records.
The ideal candidate will possess mature work habits, be task- and detail-oriented and possess the ability to work independently and in a team. Knowledge of zebrafish and live food culturing techniques, aquatic animal husbandry and how to troubleshoot problems as they occur is strongly preferred. Knowledge of aquarium system maintenance and how to detect malfunctions and determine course of action if equipment fails is preferred. B.S. in science and basic laboratory skills required. Some knowledge of molecular biology preferred.
